After what feels like a whole week of the press talking about England and the multiple different permutations of how the Three Lions will line-up, fans and Indexers alike will have several of those questions answered this evening as Gareth Southgate’s men travel to the Netherlands.
I’ve already talked about the battle for the England number 1 jersey this week but the rumours circulating from around the squad yesterday indicate that it’s Everton’s Jordan Pickford (£0.96) who has the nod and the Index has reacted by raising his price up 9p in the last 24 hours alone.
The other intriguing discussion point is that Jordan Henderson (£0.98) has been given the honour of captaining his country once again. The Liverpool man is a very divisive figure amongst fans, yet despite this, he has been the captain for Liverpool under both Jürgen Klopp and Brendan Rodgers at Anfield. As well as captaining England and the under 21s previously. With Harry Kane (£9.41) absent, the Wearsider getting the captains armband always looked likely but yesterday’s confirmation saw a huge spike in price from 93p to £1.15. He has settled back down to under the £1 mark but will Henderson lead England out in Russia?
The other story from St George’s Park was that Jack Wilshere (£2.11) had been left behind in England whilst the tests of the squad travelled to the Netherlands with a minor knock. But with the Arsenal’s man past injury record it was little surprise that some traders sold the midfielder seeing his price drop 28p. Yet he is still in contention for a start against Italy next week so could be one to watch.
Gareth Southgate’s men will be relishing the challenge posed by the young Dutch side but Indexers will be keen to see how youngster Justin Kluivert (£1.97) fares and whether or not transfer links come to the fore once more. The speculation building to this friendly has seen him rise 8p. The attackers will also be trying to beat a familiar face as Virgil Van Dijk (£1.61) will surely line up for the Dutch.
Will the Netherlands give the Three Lions a reality check or will the hype start to build?
