A New Index King?

You may not have spotted it yesterday amongst the headlines all about Cristiano Ronaldo’s (£5.90) 5th Ballon D’Or award levelling him up with his arch nemesis Lionel Messi (£7.85) but not only was the magical Argentine’s trophy haul matched yesterday but he was nearly toppled at the summit of the Football Index by a familiar face.

As I write, the Barcelona talisman is trading at £7.85 a future having been available at over £9 a future in the last month and yesterday, the little Argentine dropped as low as £7.78 but has recovered a little since. This low point brought Messi within 7p of his former teammate Neymar, who hits highs of £7.71. The PSG star now has a gap of currently 14p a future, but will Neymar overtake Messi to become Index King?

The Brazilian has seen a meteoric rise in the last month having been trading at £6.26 a month ago and now finds himself up £1.42 a future! This rise appears to have come on the back of both strong match day and media dividends. A five-star performance in matchday 5 of the Champions League against Celtic saw him take home the star forward and star player awards at the end of November and those rumours of a move to Real Madrid simply will not disappear!

These rumours have been brought back into the fold once more today with Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez stating that Neymar has a better chance of winning the Ballon D’or at the Bernebeau than at the Parc Des Princes! Talk about setting tongues wagging! This has seen him amass 500 media points as of 2pm which is only 150 off Ronaldo who was expected to romp home with today’s media win!

All this begs the question, is Neymar about to topple Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s dominance of world football and the Ballon D’Or over the last ten years and proudly take his place atop the Index? Or will King Lionel reign for a long time yet?
