Wayne Rooney was rolling back the years last night with a superb hat trick that was capped with a goal from the half line! These heroics rightly brought home the media, forward and star player dividends last night (17p a future!) and saw his price rise from £1.13 up to highs of £1.60, a huge 47p rise! But this got me thinking what would be Rooney’s price be back when he was at the peak of his powers before the Football Index and what would be the power of other stars?

The Wayne Rooney that was leading United’s charge to the Champions League final in 2009, would have been match day dividend and media dividend gold, with his 34 goals in all competitions. This would surely place him at around the £8 mark in today’s prices?
We couldn’t cast an eye back of fantasy throwbacks without a mention of another star who was famed for his half way line goals, Mr David Beckham. There’s no doubt about it but Becks would surely have been Index Gold! Sarongs, Argentine tantrums, World Cup Injuries and of course Posh and Becks, would all have led to buzz, buzz and more buzz! His ability to generate front and back story headlines would surely have made Becks the must have player in your portfolio! I think he would surely have been a £10 player! Even then I bet his return on investment would have been decent!
In more recent times, a very divisive Liverpool star who is still on the Index had his fair share of headlines, transfer sagas and lots of goals. I am of course talking about Luis Suarez, now of Barcelona trading at £2.10, but his controversial period at Anfield in the title charge of 2013/14 would have been dynamite on the Index. I suspect he would easily have hit the £7 mark in today’s prices!
Finally I had to mention Arsenal legend and now Sky Sports pundit, Thierry Henry. His flair and attacking heroics back in the day lit up the Premier League in the Invincible’s era. His regular goals would have been media gold and his price would have soared well above the £6 mark!
This is only a snapshot of past stars but who else would have been Index Gold and what price would they be? Original Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Shearer? Who are your picks?
