Defensive Value

A phrase that is often banded around on social media and Index circles is that there are always opportunities on the Index! Never has that been truer in my opinion in the current climate with so many players to choose from!

One area in particular where there has been several examples of huge increases in prices is Defenders. You may well have noticed several of these players in the trending chars of late. In fact one of yesterday’s biggest risers was the Real Madrid left back Marcelo (£1.43) who won a match day dividend at the beginning of December away to Athletic Bilbao and since then has risen by 39p in the last month! A rise of nearly 40%!

Other examples include Spurs injured Belgian, Toby Alderwiereld (£1.21) who is also up by 39p in the last month from lows of 82p a future, a huge rise of 47%! Barcelona’s attacking and assisting machine Jordi Alba (£0.97) is up 21p (27%) in a month, which is a similar rise to Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (£1.01) who is up 26p since the beginning of December, which represents a 33% increase!

All these examples show that there are some big defensive rises happening on the Index but what is the reason for this? I think that a lot of the focus when match day dividends were implemented was on some of the larger names and attacking threats but we are beginning to see stars in all positions. As they have just as much of an opportunity to take home the same payouts as other positions! Time to get looking for value in the squad list?
