Antoine Griezmann (£2.38) is never one to shy away from a bit of drama. The French star is renowned for his use of social media. Just this year, he released a documentary entitled “Antoine Griezmann: The making of a legend” (not one to blow your own trumpet Antoine?) Then there was Griezmann’s infamous ‘La décision’ video back in 2018, in which he announced to the world that he was staying at Atletico. With the news of Griezmann’s impending move, this particular video hasn’t aged too well.
It seems that after five years at Atletico, Griezmann has finally opted for pastures new and it seems as though Barcelona are the current favourites to land the Frenchman for a fee of €125million. Barcelona have been pursuing the World Cup winner for some time now and it looks as though this summer may finally be the one in which they get their wish.
With the news that Griezmann has finally opted for a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano, the Football Index was quick to respond and the Frenchman has been absolutely flying. Over the past 24 hours, Griezmann is up 28p and he also managed 2nd place in the Media Rankings on Tuesday. With three more Treble Media Days, Griezmann may well find himself floating around the top three over the course of the week.
The likely departure of Griezmann may well trigger an avalanche of transfer activity and it seems that Index traders are anticipating that Philippe Coutinho (£2.13) may be the sacrificial lamb to raise the funds needed for the deal to go through. Despite a strong start to life at Camp Nou, Coutinho has struggled to hit his stride this season and with Frenkie de Jong (£2.08) already comfirmed, Barcelona are not mucking around this summer. Whether or not Coutinho does face the axe remains to be seen, but in the meantime he will undoubtedly be linked with a move back to the Prem.
With Griezmann looking set to move on, it looks as though it will be a crucial summer for Atletico in terms of recruitment. Diego Godin (£0.41) is already confirmed to be leaving on a free transfer and Rodrigo Hernandez (£1.12) is being strongly linked with a move to Man City. As such, Atletico look as though they may have a massive chunk of change burning a hole in their pockets pretty soon. Hector Herrera (£0.47) is already joining the Spanish side on a free transfer and it looks as though Alex Telles (£0.59) will soon be following the Mexican to Madrid, but who will replace Griezmann? The likes of Edinson Cavani (£0.64) and Paulo Dybala (£2.96) have already been linked, if Griezmann does move, but as it stands there hasn’t been any concrete links.
It really does look as though many clubs are getting their war chests ready and whenever Griezmann does put pen to paper, this may well be the first shots fired in what promises to be a spectacular summer of transfers.
