It’s Cheltenham Gold Cup day this afternoon and I wanted to take a look at the runners and riders in this weeks promotion race on the Index. This weeks IPO’s are an all Serie A affair with both AS Roma and Napoli represented by the pair of Kevin Strootman and Dries Mertens. It look set to be an exciting promotion with both being recently linked with moves to the Premier League.
The first player to be promoted at 13.00 is the Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman, who has shot up the squad list this week thanks to some strong transfer rumours about a potential €40 Million bid from Man Utd. The Dutchman was regularly linked with the Red Devil’s when his compatriot Louis Van Gaal was in charge but a serious injury curtailed the interest being firmed up. Now it appears that Jose Mourinho is also a fan with talks appearing to be well advanced according to Dutch sources.
At the top of the squad list, with an IPO at 13.15 is the Belgian attacker Dries Mertens. The diminutive Belgian is enjoying a fine season with Napoli having bagged 23 goals to date for the Light Blues. This week Mertens has been accredited with comments of dreaming to play in the Premier League, Man Utd have been heavily linked and perhaps more sensationally Newcastle United. The Toon manager Rafael Benitez was the manager of Napoli when Mertens signed and apparently he hasn’t forgotten his efforts in bringing him to Napoli. Such a move would be stunning.
Previous promotions on the Index with players having strong links with Man Utd has meant one thing, a high price. The Monaco pair of Kylian M’Bappé (£1.72) and Bernardo Silva (£1.21) settled over £1 at promotion and this week alone Romelu Lukaku (£4.31) and Thomas Müller (£0.94) have experienced high growth following links with Utd. This all auger’s well for both Strootman and Mertens today, are both going to settle above £1?
Best of luck traders!
