It feels like the World Cup fever sweeping the nation was only a couple of weeks ago, yet tomorrow will see Gareth Southgate pick his first England squad for the newly devised UEFA Nations League where England have been partnered with Spain and Croatia. The first international break will see the Three Lions take on Spain in the new competition followed by a friendly with Switzerland. Yet ahead of the announcement of the squad what should traders be looking out for?
One of the most surprising stories over the past few days has surrounded the international future of West Ham United’s young defender Declan Rice (£1.27). The youngster has actually turned out for Ireland in international friendlies, yet the news this week is that Gareth Southgate has reportedly sounded Rice out about playing for the Three Lions. Having not played a competitive match for Ireland this is all above board. The Hammer has not been called up for Ireland’s international break and is supposedly taking some time to make a decision in his international future. Will we see him called up tomorrow? In the last seven days he has risen by £0.35 on the back of the speculation, a return of 31%. Could he rise further with a shock announcement?
Another potential opportunity for traders is Gareth Southgate’s aim to keep blooding youngsters through the system. It is with this in mind that reports are heavily linking the talented youngsters, Phil Foden (£3.65) and Jadon Sancho (£3.57) with a call-up to the national side. Both have dazzled for Three Lions in the younger age categories and the indications are that Southgate is keen to involve them both in the squad for the upcoming internationals.
This would appear to be an insight into the future and also an aim to increase the amount of creativity in the squad, something that was arguably missing in Russia despite an incredible campaign. These links have seen the pair steadily rise in the last week with Borussia Dortmund’s winger Sancho up £0.51 a share and the Manchester City youngster up £0.21 a share in the same period. Both youngsters are of course in the Top 200 and would qualify for Media Dividends, they will surely be taking these home with a call-up tomorrow.
Elsewhere we had the surprise announcement yesterday that Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy (£1.03) was retiring from international football to concentrate on his club career. Does this open the door for a new striker to join the squad? Well, one option may well be Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (£1.69) who has enjoyed a fine start to the season with two goals in his opening three games. The striker has seen his price rocket £0.38 in the last week alone after reports at the weekend linking him with a call-up. Could he too see a rise?
These are of course just some of the potential stories to come out from Southgate’s squad announcement, but will we see any other surprises? One thing for sure there are opportunities for traders.
